- ➤ Francine the calico cat returned to her Lowe’s store after hitching a ride on a truck to a distribution center in Garysburg—two employees drove 90 minutes from Richmond to pick her up, and she resumed greeting customers. NBC Washington

- ➤ DC Startup & Tech Week will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a full day of panels at Amazon HQ2 in Arlington on Oct 23. Sponsored by Arlington Economic Development, the event will bring founders, investors & experts together to discuss technology and defense innovation. ARLnow
- ➤ Goodwill on Glebe Road in Arlington will close on October 26 to start renovations for a new seven-story building that will include a larger store, affordable housing, and an affordable childcare facility—adding a two-level underground garage to ease donation traffic. Goodwill said customers may donate at alternate sites until the new store opens in 2027. WJLA

- ➤ Wilson Bender, an Arlington artist, announced plans to launch Arlington Autonomous Media on Roku—an independently funded channel that will use AIM archives to feature local political commentary and community events—after AIM collapsed. He will recruit volunteers and finance the project with his art, culinary work, and grants. ARLnow
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia urged Arlington homeowners to leave some leaves in their yards because decaying leaves add nutrients to the soil and provide shelter for animals. The Virginia Department of Forestry will offer nearly 60 tree and shrub seedlings for order until April—deliveries will begin mid-February and special white oak seedlings will honor the nation's anniversary. - ➤ At the Sept. 30 meeting, County Board Chair Takis Karantonis said the county is still looking for a new library and a home for Synetic Theater after it left its Bell Street location in mid-2024—officials plan to review options as residential growth outpaces current improvements and funds are lower than before. The council noted that these steps remain on the county government's radar as planning continues. ARLnow
- ➤ The Arlington Planning Commission examined ways to boost deeply affordable housing for families earning less than 60% of the area median income. Officials noted that building 30% AMI units is tough because they cost up to $180,000 more per unit plus the system is confusing for developers while a gap of roughly 8,000 units persists. ARLnow
- ➤ Flights from Reagan National Airport in Arlington were delayed 30 minutes on Wednesday due to air traffic control staffing shortages—linked to the federal shutdown. The FAA reported that delays averaged 30 minutes until 10 p.m. and some flights experienced additional landing delays between 6 and 7 p.m. WJLA
- ➤ Virginia Representatives sent a letter to OMB Director Russ Vought saying that threatening to not pay furloughed workers is illegal — Senator Kaine warned such actions might lead to legal challenges. In Arlington, the Planning Commission backed a plan to change an office building in Ballston into apartments — and WMATA opened a new elevator at Pentagon City station to help more people use transit. - ➤ At the Arlington County high-school cross-country meet held Sept. 29 at Bluemont Park, Yorktown girls won when rookie Molly Hardwick finished in 17:51 and O’Connell boys won with junior Jayse Brefczynski taking first in 15:34.
