COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arlington voters can choose the best coffee shop as part of ARLnow Readers’ Choice awards—voting closes in two weeks. Voting for Best Mortgage Lender is open until Friday at 8:30 a.m. while the Best Japanese Restaurant winners, including Yume Sushi, Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ, and Boru Ramen & Sushi, have been announced.  ARLnow

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tiki Thai, an award-winning Thai restaurant from Reston, has signed a lease on the ground floor of Reva at 244 19th Court S. in Crystal City and will fill an empty retail bay within 10 to 12 months—its owner said the site will offer both fine dining with live entertainment and a fast-casual space for Bird’s Eye Thai.  ARLnow

CULTURE NEWS

  • Courthouse Library in Arlington will host a free Death Cafe on Tuesday where people share their thoughts about death over two hours with tea and cake. Volunteer Stephanie Dillemuth hopes the sold-out event—complete with a waitlist—will help people talk about death in simple, honest terms.  ARLnow
  • Last weekend, historical re-enactors at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery brought past lives to light in an event hosted by the church and the Arlington Historical Society—celebrating 170 years of history through portrayals of local figures and new research on the church’s civil war ties and slavery. The program helped Arlington residents connect with the community’s deep history.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arlington County Department of Environmental Services is accepting written comments on the Dumbarton Street culvert replacement project to improve the flow under N. Dumbarton St. Comments must be sent by October 24 — if needed, the County will hold a public hearing — to ensure concerns are addressed.  ARLnow
  • Governor Youngkin issued an executive directive–ordering the Virginia Board of Health to ban biological males from girls’ locker rooms, bathrooms and sports to protect single-sex spaces in schools. The move remains under review–with key questions about its effective date and candidate Abigail Spanberger’s future stance still unanswered.  WJLA
  • At a Sept. 30 online forum, County Board candidates in Arlington discussed converting old office buildings into apartments and hotels. Board Chair Takis Karantonis said three projects approved in July cut office vacancies and more projects will add 900 apartments and 350 hotel rooms—candidates debated renovation costs and community impact.  ARLnow

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arlington County high-school football teams compete for an unofficial championship as the Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots battle for bragging rights each fall — the title goes to the team that wins both games against its county rivals. The teams played on Oct. 3 and will meet again on Oct. 17 and Oct. 30, with Wakefield, which last won in 1995 and lost seven straight matchups, looking to break its streak.  ARLnow
