CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, October 3, Arlington’s Mill Community Center will host Festival LatinoAmericano from 5 to 9 p.m.—families and neighbors will enjoy a flag parade, live performances and food from local vendors that celebrate Hispanic culture.  ARLnow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washington-Liberty High School held its centennial celebration on Saturday, where alumni from the 1950s to today shared tours, performances, and memories at the school, and organizers said the events—beginning in late 2024—will end with a homecoming football game against Herndon High School on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.  ARLnow
  • Arlington Public Schools said they will not sell buildings even if enrollment drops persist, with Jeffrey Chambers explaining that past decisions in the 1970s—when facilities were sold prematurely—have taught the district that enrollment is cyclical. The district reported 27,603 students on Sept. 4, and school board members will soon set guidelines for the 2027—36 capital-improvement program.  ARLnow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Arlington officials warn that spotted lanternflies will increase next year because their eggs survive winter—residents are urged to remove Tree-of-Heaven trees to help limit the pests. The first freeze expected on October 25th should kill off the adult insects.  DC News Now

FINANCE NEWS

  • Arlington Community Federal Credit Union — a 74-year-old bank with nearly 25,000 members — will merge with Alexandria-based CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union and take its name if regulators approve the plan and members vote in favor, and the combined credit union will have 10 branches and over $1 billion in assets when it integrates later in 2026 and early 2027.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington County is seeking feedback on new bike boulevard designs that include signage, curb extensions, and improved road markings along Columbia Pike—feedback is due Oct. 5 and final designs will be released this winter.  ARLnow
