COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A free event on the future of artificial intelligence—AI Unlocked—will be held this weekend in Crystal City with sessions at the Alamo Drafthouse and other venues featuring interactive digital art and robotics. Road closures will be in effect from Oct 1 through Oct 5 on S. Bell Street, portions of 18th and 19th Streets, and Crystal Drive, affecting local traffic during these times.  ARLnow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts say Arlington’s spotted lanternflies will vanish with the first frost (around Oct. 25) but their eggs will hatch in the spring so more are expected next year. Arlington County is removing the invasive Tree-of-Heaven to help local predators control the pests and urges residents to do the same on private property.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington Park and Recreation officials may ask for up to $1M a year to fight invasive plants in local parks; the current budget is only $100K and they will discuss the proposal at a Natural Resources Joint Advisory Group meeting in early November. In another move, commission members asked county leaders to rename a redeveloped park in Crystal City as Restaurant Row Plaza as part of renovations expected to finish next summer.  ARLnow
  • The Community Ambassador Program connects Arlington seniors to local services but needs better outreach, with officials noting that volunteers must learn to become active advocates. County leaders, the Area Agency on Aging, Marymount University & Arlington Neighborhood Village will boost training to help reduce isolation among older residents.  ARLnow

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, the Washington-Liberty Generals repeated as district golf champions on the par-71 Herndon Centennial Golf Course, scoring 598 over 36 holes and finishing one shot ahead of the Yorktown Patriots. Junior Emmett Spence led the team with a 139 total over two rounds — his improved play secures their spot in the 6D North Region tournament at Bristow Manor Golf Club.  ARLnow
