COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arlington roads will be closed for the Ai Unlocked Festival as S. Bell Street will be shut from Oct. 1 (7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 5) with northbound lanes restricted overnight, and closures on 19th Court S, 18th Street S and Crystal Drive will begin on Oct. 3 until Oct. 5 — drivers should allow extra travel time due to limited parking and detours.  DC News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arlington Public Schools earned strong test scores for the 2024-25 school year—ranking near the top statewide while trailing Loudoun in all five Standards of Learning subjects and outperforming Fairfax, Prince William and Alexandria. School Board officials discussed the results at a Sept. 18 meeting—saying the data will guide plans to support all student groups with consultation teams to target gaps.  ARLnow
  • The orchard at Dr. Charles Drew Elementary School produced fruit after surviving a dry August and all saplings thrived—thanks to careful watering by students and local community members who held a dedication ceremony on Saturday.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction on the permanent roundabout at Military Road and Nelly Custis Drive has started and will include widened sidewalks, upgraded utilities and a rain garden at the center. County officials say road closures will shift later this fall and the project will be completed in late 2027—travelers are urged to use alternate routes.  ARLnow
  • County leaders in Aurora Highlands are preparing to rename and upgrade a 900-square-foot park formerly known as 23rd Street S. and S. Eads Street Park after a survey found 73% of residents want a new name with options like 23rd Street Plaza under review and a final decision expected by year-end. The County Board also approved continuing participation in Purdue Pharma's bankruptcy plan to secure opioid-settlement funds with the first payment expected in 2026.  ARLnow
  • WMATA announced changes to its Metrobus routes after veterans said they were unhappy with not being dropped off directly at the Veterans' hospital (rider feedback prompted the update) and the revised routes will be part of the Better Bus Network schedule.  WJLA

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ballston’s Pumpkin Palooza will start next week as at least 13 local restaurants offer fall dishes like pumpkin-flavored pancakes and pasta, hosted by the Ballston Business Improvement District. The kickoff celebration at Ballston Quarter will run (11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.) on Oct. 1 and participants can exchange punch cards for fall mugs during the Ballston Mega Market (3–7 p.m.) on Nov. 6.  ARLnow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Arlington-based Realtor Eli Tucker says that after a post-Labor Day rise in listings, the housing market will slow with fewer listings and longer contract times through the end of the year—buyers may have more time to decide but must be prepared as most homes go under contract within 10 to 30 days.  ARLnow

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Wakefield Warriors won their third straight game by beating the Justice Wolves 33-12 on Sept. 19th, raising their record to 3-1 and marking their best start since 2021. They will play Washington-Liberty on Oct. 3rd in an Arlington district matchup — coach Clarence Martin said the team will face a fresh challenge.  ARLnow
  • The Bishop O’Connell Knights lost 29-14 to the Washington Patriots on Sept. 19—dropping to a 1-3 record after four fall games. The team will face the Landon Bears on Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m.—with coach Todd Sabatino noting issues like penalties and a missed field goal that hurt their play.  ARLnow
