BUSINESS NEWS

  • barre3, a boutique fitness studio, has signed a lease for its new Ballston space at 818 N. Quincy Street and will host free pop-up classes across Arlington over the next few weeks—free 45-minute sessions are scheduled until Oct. 7, and the studio will officially open later this year with workouts that mix cardio, strength training, and breath work.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman James Walkinshaw won the special election for Virginia’s 11th district this week—replacing the late Gerry Connolly—and he discussed his plans for Northern Virginia. He said he will focus on local issues and serving his new community.  DC News Now
  • County Board members approved a redevelopment plan for Clarendon at 2500 Wilson Blvd that will replace a five-story office with a 14-story mixed-use building offering 316 residential units and 14,000 square feet of retail space—officials plan temporary arrangements for a displaced daycare center. They also deferred a proposal for an eight-story multifamily project near Rosslyn at the former Inn of Rosslyn hotel site because it did not meet county plans and will return for further review.  ARLnow
  • Arlington’s County Board Chair Takis Karantonis said nothing can be done to prevent Arlington Independent Media’s demise as the nonprofit faces an auction for its assets on Monday, September 22 due to $70,000 in unpaid taxes and rent. AIM’s current leadership may avert the auction by paying off the debt — otherwise, the sale will likely end the longtime local media outlet.  ARLnow
  • Metro will close NoMa-Gallaudet U station on Sept. 20 and 21 for crosstie replacement—free shuttle buses will run between Union Station and Rhode Island Ave.—and later will use shuttles on Blue, Orange and Silver lines on Sept. 27 and 28 to replace train service at key stops.  NBC Washington

  • Dr. Vivek Murthy, a former surgeon general, will speak about the epidemic of loneliness at an Arlington event on Thursday at VHC Health—refreshments and resource tables start at 5 p.m. with a moderated conversation beginning at 6 p.m. as he explains the links between social connection and overall health.  ARLnow
  • New data shows Northern Virginia vaccination rates differ—Arlington County reached 98% for the MMR vaccine while Alexandria dropped to 88%, which is below the level needed for herd immunity. The report noted that nearby jurisdictions are mostly above 90% as vaccine exemptions have risen, highlighting a mixed picture amid ongoing public health efforts.  NBC Washington

  • Over 200 Arlington seniors took part in the record 2025 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics that opened Saturday at Thomas Jefferson Community Center and will run through Oct. 1 at 30 local venues. The county's 209 competitors mark a 17% increase from last year — and local officials promised to challenge Fairfax County in total participation.  ARLnow
  • The Wakefield football team won 34-20 at Lewis on Sept. 12, improving to a 2-1 record — the best start since 2020 — and will face Justice Wolves on Sept. 19. Coach Clarence Martin said the team played tough and learned from an earlier loss, setting a promising tone for the season.  ARLnow
