  • ARLnow is hosting a Readers’ Choice poll for the best hardware store in Arlington—residents may write in any favorite store as voting will close in two weeks.  ARLnow
  • ARLnow released a new podcast episode on September 12th where Lene, Dan and Vernon’s pet rabbit discussed local news including a mahjong studio opening in Falls Church, Covid vaccine availability without a prescription, legal battles over Missing Middle housing and a Thunderbirds pilot sharing personal experiences — the episode reviewed events from the past week.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eli's Taqueria at 3207 Columbia Pike in Arlington is applying to the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority for a license to sell and manufacture alcoholic beverages—owner Nevi Paredes Espana said objections must be submitted within 30 days of the September 12th publication.  ARLnow
  • New Rep. James Walkinshaw was sworn in and is focusing on affordable housing in Fairfax County—he will work to meet a goal of 10,000 affordable units by 2034 while preserving current homes. He said boosting housing options is essential for supporting families in the area.  NBC Washington
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin called on Virginians to join a statewide moment of prayer and reflection at noon Friday to honor Charlie Kirk, a conservative influencer fatally shot in the neck at a Turning Point USA event in Utah on Sept. 10, and he ordered that state and local flags remain at half-mast until sunset Sept. 14.  DC News Now
  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin has issued an executive order that modernizes voting system standards and strengthens data sharing with federal agencies to secure Virginia’s election process. The order requires a statewide exercise by the Fusion Center and Emergency Management before early voting begins.  WJLA
  • Arlington officials have started negotiations with Unisyn Election Service Online to procure new voting equipment for precincts and early-voting sites, with the new system expected for early voting in May ahead of the June state primary. Board chair Dominick Schirripa said the price-competitive equipment will let voters rank more candidates in County Board elections—updating a system last installed in 2015.  ARLnow

  • Virginia’s health department signed an order on Wednesday allowing pharmacists to give COVID vaccines to adults 18 and over to ease access—children at risk are not covered and new federal guidance is expected after experts meet next week.  NBC Washington
