EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge in Alexandria denied a restraining order request by Fairfax County and Arlington public schools to block the DOE from freezing federal funds over disputed bathroom and locker room policies (the cases were dismissed without prejudice and the schools must refile their claims). - ➤ Arlington Public Schools is expanding its dual enrollment program that allowed 19 Arlington Tech seniors to earn associate’s degrees from NOVA in the spring — a record high of 20% of its class and half of the NOVA degrees awarded to local high-schoolers. The district will add new college courses and credit pathways so more students can gain transferable credits while in high school. ARLnow
- ➤ A federal judge did not rule on the suit by Fairfax and Arlington Public Schools against the Education Department to stop a funding freeze because the court said it lacks the authority to order payment of money—so it sent the case to the Court of Federal Claims. Arlington Public Schools said the frozen funds help pay for free meals and special education that many students need. WTOP

- ➤ Arlington native Major Jeff 'Simmer' Downie will fly his F-16C with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds at Joint Base Andrews on Sept. 13 and 14 — his flight will mark a homecoming as he returns near his childhood home. ARLnow
- ➤ On Tuesday, House of Delegates candidates in Arlington debated transportation planning and funding, with incumbents stressing seniority and challengers asking for fresh ideas. The candidates argued that roads need safe upgrades for pedestrians and cyclists—each offering different plans to cut waste and support Metro services. ARLnow
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ VHC Health filed a request on Aug. 29 to change land use for a new behavioral-health facility in Glencarlyn using a county-owned 11.5-acre parcel on S. Carlin Springs Road. The three-story building will have 146 beds & 110 employees and will undergo a county review process before moving forward. ARLnow

- ➤ On Aug 28, four Arlington high school quarterbacks combined for 53 passes for 772 yards and eight touchdowns with just three interceptions—Samson Schneider of Yorktown, Tyler Flint Steinig of Washington Liberty, Judah Connor of Wakefield and Ryan Turpin of Bishop O’Connell led their teams in fall season openers. Schneider ran for an extra 62 yards and a touchdown in a close 29 to 28 loss while Flint Steinig helped secure a 55 to 22 win, adding promise for the season. ARLnow
