COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Choco and Lux are bonded ferrets available for adoption. Lux is calm and food-motivated while Choco is energetic and curious—visit the shelter during adoption hours.  ARLnow
  • The annual 9/11 Memorial 5K—marking its 23rd year—will be held in Arlington Saturday evening and will prompt road closures near the Pentagon and in Crystal City from about 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Additionally, Rosslyn roads will close for the Rosslyn Jazz Fest from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.  ARLnow

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Toastique—a D.C.-based gourmet toast cafe—will open this Saturday at 244 19th Court S. in Crystal City with giveaways kicking off at 8 a.m. and a $50 credit for the first 100 guests spending $10. The cafe will serve sweet and savory loaded toasts, plant-based breakfasts, smoothies and coffee daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  ARLnow
  • Burger Billy’s Joint opened last spring at 3800 Langston Blvd in Cherrydale and has grown popular for its smash burgers and friendly service under head chef Keshaun Winston. The restaurant plans to add beers and wines and expand to new locations—building on its first year of success despite nearby empty retail spaces.  ARLnow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A burn ban is in effect in Arlington because of unusually dry conditions, and the Fire Department said open flames including fire pits and chimineas are not allowed until noon on Saturday—records show August was the driest on record.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington’s former trash contractor American Disposal Services sent a letter to the County Board last week asking to be considered for service again after residents faced up to 200 missed trash collections when Bates Trucking — Trash Removal took over on Aug. 1. The company, which provided service for 10 years and offered a cost-saving rate, said it is ready to resume service immediately if the current provider falls short.  ARLnow
  • At a Tuesday forum sponsored by the Arlington County Civic Federation, County Board Chair Takis Karantonis defended his record and economic plans while facing challenges over leadership style and budgeting from candidates Bob Cambridge, Audrey Clement, Jeramy Olmack, and Carlos De Castro—discussions that focused on community responsiveness and fiscal priorities.  ARLnow

  • Himalayan Wild Yak in Arlington serves authentic Nepalese food such as goat Bhutan—goat intestines stuffed with organ meat—and yak korma created by chef Keshar Jarga Magar and his family, offering diners a taste of the Himalayas using meats raised on nearby small farms.  WTOP
