CRIME NEWS

  • Arlington police arrested 15 people on Aug. 22 in a Pentagon City retail theft crackdown—charging them with multiple offenses, including one suspect accused of threatening officers, while recovered stolen merchandise and issued 20 bans from local stores.  DC News Now
  • An 18-year-old high school student, Marvin Adelso Hernandez Lopez, was arrested in Lyon Park for setting a May 15 apartment fire near Columbia Pike at a Douglas Park garden apartment using a 7-Eleven cup filled with gasoline—he admitted planning the blaze with others to settle a debt and now faces charges of arson, conspiracy and unlawful gun possession with a preliminary hearing on Oct. 15.  ARLnow

  • Millions of travelers are preparing for Labor Day weekend as the TSA expects heavy airport traffic—AAA has outlined best and worst travel times for each day and noted that fuel costs are lower nationwide.  DC News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington Independent Media’s broadcast studio—comprising hundreds of professional-grade items—is up for auction over $70K in unpaid taxes and rent, with bidders able to inspect equipment on Sept. 19 and the auction closing on Sept. 22. County Treasurer Carla de la Pava said removal is scheduled for Sept. 24—25 and AIM may halt the sale if it repays its debt.  ARLnow
  • Recent polls show the Virginia governor race has tightened as Spanberger leads by fewer points than before while Earle-Sears gains support by speaking out on school policies said to violate Title IX in Northern Virginia. On Friday Earle-Sears announced a $500,000 donation from BET co-founder Robert Johnson after a racist sign was displayed at an Arlington School Board meeting.  WJLA
  • Metro service on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines experienced delays on Friday morning after a smoke smell was reported near Potomac Avenue—metro crews inspected the area and offloaded trains to ease train traffic.  DC News Now
  • Arlington county will operate on a modified schedule for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1—public libraries, most community centers, courts, DMV Select, the Treasurer’s Office and Cultural Affairs buildings will be closed while the Long Bridge Aquatics and Fitness Center remains open from 6 a.m.—2 p.m. Parking meters will not be enforced, buses will run on a holiday schedule and Metro on a Sunday schedule, with Arlington Public Schools having started a four-day vacation yesterday and some recycling drop-off sites closing starting tomorrow.  ARLnow
