BUSINESS NEWS

  • Arlington restaurateur Reese Gardner will open a new golf-inspired tavern, Loopers Tavern, at 4238 Wilson Blvd in Ballston Quarter to replace the vacant Bartaco space. The venue will offer lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and late-night options as the lease is finalized.  ARLnow

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Virginia Beer and Wine Festival will be held at Water Park in Crystal City on September 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. Local vendors will sell drinks for $5 and offer one free drink ticket when you reserve a spot plus live music, lawn games and kid activities are part of the event.  ARLnow

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Arlington’s unemployment rate rose to 3.5% in July from 3.4% in June—up from 2.5% in the previous July—and the number of job seekers jumped 38.4% year over year to 5,402. Local leaders and economists said federal job cuts may have added to the rise in unemployment.  ARLnow
  • Millions are preparing to travel for Labor Day weekend as the TSA expects 17 million flyers and AAA notes heavy road traffic, with today predicted as the busiest day at the airport. AAA advises leaving early to avoid peak travel hours while Virginia drivers benefit from lower gas prices at around $3.04 per gallon — boosting savings compared to last year.  DC News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marymount University in Arlington had a record freshman class of 538 and is planning a new student hub, while Shenandoah University in Winchester welcomed 620 new students—both schools focus on programs that prepare students for stable careers. Officials say new sports like women’s flag football and men’s volleyball helped attract more students.  NBC Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Commission members raised concerns about the STAR program for residents with disabilities after an Aug.18 audit found poor performance—clear metrics and a dedicated staff were lacking—and they are urging the County Board to intervene. Interim chair Karen Audant and member Bryant Atkins say changes will be discussed at a meeting on Sept.15 to improve the service.  ARLnow
