CRIME NEWS

  • Arlington police are searching for a man suspected of peeping under a woman's restroom stall at Aurora Hills Library on Aug. 19—he is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, in his 40s, and wearing a green hoodie, a black hat, and white shoes.  DC News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Arlington Historical Society is asking local writers to chronicle 250 years of Arlington history for the nation’s 250th birthday next year—submissions are due by March and may update one of 180 online articles or add new research on topics like art, sports and immigrant stories. The society is also running a competition for youth in grades 8 to 12 with a top prize of $1,000 and other awards, and the winning work will appear in a historical magazine for the May community history fair.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arlington County Civic Federation will hold its annual candidate forum Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Hazel Auditorium (VHC Health) beginning at 7 p.m. where 12 candidates will debate local races for County Board, School Board and House Districts 1 and 2, with the event streamed live ahead of Election Day.  ARLnow
  • An advisory panel on Arlington’s Affordable Housing Investment Fund said that proposed funding changes need strong support from elected officials, developers and activists after its Aug 19 meeting. The working group will send its proposals to the full Housing Commission on Sept 18+ these changes could raise developer contributions by 30% to 92% if approved.  ARLnow
  • Arlington County Fire Department is training Joker — a yellow Labrador retriever — to detect fire accelerants and explosives alongside his handler, deputy fire marshal Josh Runion, in a six-week program that will prepare him to help investigate fires.  ARLnow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New data shows that Arlington will add 1,806 rental apartments by the end of the year—an increase of 10% over last year and one in every 280 new homes built nationally. This rise in units may help keep rents steady as more choices become available.  ARLnow
