CRIME NEWS

  • An Arlington man was arrested after he allegedly tried to carjack a motorcycle in Halls Hill while armed with an airsoft gun — police said they recovered suspected narcotics and charged him on multiple counts.  ARLnow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seniors at Washington-Liberty High School celebrated the first day of school on Monday with their annual Senior Sunrise on the football field—about 100 students gathered for breakfast, photos, and to mark the start of their final year. APS also announced a new cellphone pouch policy for high schools and a literacy program that will launch next month.  ARLnow
  • Arlington Public Schools is expanding the use of magnetic locking security pouches to store phones during school hours after a successful pilot at Wakefield High — where teachers noted improved student engagement. The policy will be fully implemented at Wakefield, Washington-Liberty, Yorktown, Arlington Career Center, and HB Woodlawn high schools, while Arlington Community and Langston high schools will use the pouches on a limited basis, and APS expects 28,000 students and 5,000 staff to return as it works to fill 34 teacher vacancies with new support programs.  WJLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Arlington see 10 new speed cameras near schools as crews installed them, bringing the total to 28 and activating the cameras when a nearby 20 mph sign flashes during student drop-off and pick-up times. The county began a 30-day warning period on Monday, Aug. 25 for these cameras—after which speeding drivers will face $100 fines.  NBC Washington
  • Officials installed new speed cameras near Arlington schools — a measure to monitor traffic and protect students — and the cameras will help reduce speeding on nearby roads.  NBC Washington

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Several Arlington restaurants extended Summer Restaurant Week promotions through August 31; Lyon Hall, Bar Chinois and Seoul Prime now offer prix fixe meals, and Bar Chinois is serving a $40 three-course dinner at its Crystal City location—its first time in the event.  ARLnow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A developer near Crystal City closed on the land for Highlands Row—a 42-unit townhouse project that will break ground later this year with homes expected to deliver in late 2026. EYA LLC partnered with Arlington County, Amazon's Housing Equity Fund and others to add new and affordable housing options.  ARLnow
  • First home buyers can now find affordable condos in Arlington as the market stays soft with prices near $450,000 to $500,000 and ready to move in units that keep costs predictable.
