COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arlington County Fair opened Thursday with a rainy start under new management by the Department of Parks and Recreation—bringing changes like allowing alcohol on the grounds—and workers with years of experience shared tips and memories as local visitors enjoy the event through Sunday.  ARLnow

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Onelife Fitness will begin a $2 million expansion next week at its Ballston Quarter gym to build new exercise, recovery, and physical therapy spaces and to add about 12,000 square feet to double its training floor—designed to minimize disruption for gym members. The project is expected to finish by January.  ARLnow

CRIME NEWS

  • Arlington County police responded shortly before 9:45 p.m. to a shooting at an apartment on the 2500 block of S. Adams Street in the Arna Valley neighborhood—where a man was shot in the leg and taken by ambulance to a local trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries while officers continue their investigation.  ARLnow
  • Two men pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to steal over 100 catalytic converters in Arlington, Fairfax, Montgomery and Richmond as Erick Alfaro Guevara, who pleaded guilty yesterday (Wednesday) to one count and will be sentenced on Oct 28, joined Jose Wilmer Ortiz Granados, who pleaded guilty on July 1 and will be sentenced on Sept 30.  ARLnow

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • More than two dozen restaurants in Arlington and Falls Church will offer set menus during Restaurant Week, which starts Monday, Aug. 18 and runs until Sunday, Aug. 24. Prices range from $25 to $65 per person, and some restaurants with live jazz will let diners join a sweepstakes for festival tickets and a free dinner—information from the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington.  ARLnow
