  • The Animal Welfare League of Arlington will unveil limited edition beer cans on Thursday at The Board Room brewery in Lyon Park featuring winning pets from its Rescue Brew Contest. The contest charged $25 per entry and $1 per vote, raising $53,000 — funds that will support AWLA’s animal care programs.  ARLnow
  • Crews are setting up the Thomas Jefferson Community and Fitness Center for the Arlington County Fair today—an event running until August 17 that offers food, rides, contests, games and free performances for families.  DC News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters rescued a woman from a second-floor window during a house fire in Alcova Heights on Tuesday morning as they arrived around 5:45 a.m.—she was the only occupant with two dogs and was taken to Medstar hospital with non-life-threatening injuries—and crews extinguished the blaze by 6:50 a.m.  ARLnow

BUSINESS NEWS

  • An empty space left by Corner Bakery Cafe in Courthouse will be filled by Rocoto’s Restaurant and Bakery, which plans to offer high-end casual Tex-Mex and Latin American fusion with an emphasis on seafood. Owner Jaime Vargas (a Falls Church resident) said the restaurant is under construction, applied for a state liquor license last Thursday, and is expected to open in October (using repurposed equipment from the former bakery).  ARLnow

CULTURE NEWS

  • Arlington Historical Society held a program at the Ball-Sellers House on Saturday to mark the 250th anniversary of the Virginia militia—honoring the local Fairfax unit set in January and the statewide force created in August—and speakers and re-enactors explained Revolutionary War history. The society is now leading plans for next year’s commemoration of American independence.  ARLnow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arlington Public Schools approved a new rule that uses the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature—an index combining heat and humidity—to decide when athletic contests and practices need adjustments in hot weather. The policy complies with a state law effective July 1 and was approved by the School Board as part of its consent agenda.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington’s congressman Don Beyer visited Farmville Detention Center on Friday to meet detainees facing medical and confinement challenges—this led DHS to publicly criticize him for favoring detainees with criminal convictions over crime victims. Beyer’s office said his visit focused on the facility’s inadequate medical care and poor conditions.  ARLnow
