Good morning, Arlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 12th of August.
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Arlington’s largest food pantry faces an $891,000 gap in its budget this fiscal year because 23,190 residents have been referred and nearly 200,000 visits were recorded—an 8.9% rise from last year. CEO Charlie Meng warned that cuts to federal programs and rising costs may force the nonprofit to rely on its reserves unless donations or county support increase. ARLnow
- ➤ A survey shows that for $1,500 a month, Arlington residents rent apartments of only 476 square feet—much less than the national average of 715 square feet. The study compared Arlington with Alexandria—where similar budgets yield more space—and found that other Virginia areas offer larger rentals for the same cost. ARLnow
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday, a water main break on Columbia Pike at S. Dinwiddie Street killed over 1,000 fish in Four Mile Run with cloudy water seen near Shirlington dog park. County crews fixed the break quickly and restored service within an hour (county spokesperson Peter Golkin explained that a burst of chlorinated water shocked the fish). ARLnow
- ➤ Ten new food disposal bins were installed around Arlington last week at Metro stations in Pentagon City, Colonial Village, Court House, and Clarendon to expand composting options for residents in apartments and condos. Residents must download the Bigbelly Smart Compost app — scan a QR code to unlock the bins and dispose of food scraps. ARLnow
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Arlington’s historic preservation process protects 39 Local Historic Districts and other recognized properties by requiring owners to work with the Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board to maintain authentic exteriors—benefits include tax credits for approved rehabilitation and design review assistance. Homeowners continue to preserve the county’s centuries-old history while potentially boosting property values for future generations. ARLnow
