- ➤ Nettie’s Tavern will open Monday, Aug. 11 in Clarendon in a former Whitlow’s space. The new venue, named after a beloved friend of restaurateur Reese Gardner, will serve Italian American-inspired and Appalachian cuisine—featuring weekly specials and a grand opening brunch on Aug. 16. ARLnow
- ➤ Seniors at Culpepper Garden may remain if they shift from assisted to independent living with extra services, as nonprofit president Marta Hill Gray told the Arlington Commission on Aging at the July 21 meeting. The nonprofit hired a geriatric-care firm to assess about 70 residents’ needs, but most with complex care will still have to move next year — the plan is part of a restructuring. ARLnow

- ➤ Clarendon Ballroom has redesigned its rooftop into The Deck with latticework—providing extra seating and Mediterranean-themed decor and food—and customers can enjoy a summer happy hour with specials like gyros and flavorful drinks from Wednesday through Sunday while the team plans seasonal events such as a fall Oktoberfest beer garden and a winter ski chalet theme. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Arlington will see a change in trash collection as Bates Trucking and Trash Removal will begin serving roughly 33,000 households while pickup days, accepted materials, and fees remain the same. County officials said the new contract was awarded in June and Bates’ crews will work with neighborhoods to avoid disruptions — the family-owned firm has served the region for decades — as the transition proceeds. - ➤ The National Park Service will install 14 new water fountain and refill stations along the Mount Vernon Trail, the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial and other federally managed areas in Arlington. Two stations are operating now and the remainder will be ready by 2026—built with dual fountains, bottle fillers and pet bowls, with a ribbon cutting planned for October. ARLnow
