CRIME NEWS

  • Arlington County Police said on July 26 that three men, including two thin white men & one heavy-set white man, entered a business, assaulted a known victim and threatened him with a machete before fleeing, and the victim received minor treatment & remains under investigation.  DC News Now
  • Arlington police arrested a 27-year-old man — who became agitated during an early morning fight — after he allegedly tried to knife a victim near Clarendon's bar district at about 2 a.m. on Sunday, leaving the victim with a minor hand injury.  ARLnow
  • Police investigated an attempted bank robbery in Ballston on July 24 when a man passed a note to a bank teller at the 800 block of N. Randolph Street and fled empty-handed, and later that night near Columbia Pike, two suspects tried to carjack a parked vehicle, stealing a wallet and electronics—no injuries were reported.  ARLnow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Federal officials froze $1.5M for Arlington Public Schools to review spending on programs for at-risk students, which left key support funding in doubt. Billions were released Friday, but school leaders still worry that Title I and special-ed supports may face cuts — they now await confirmation on the final funding status.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington’s Planning Commission currently serves without pay but may earn a stipend in the future as elected officials review ways to support its heavy workload + caregiving expenses, though no compensation will be provided for this fiscal year that began on July 1. Board Chair Takis Karantonis and Commission Chair Tenley Peterson stressed that the issue remains under discussion amid ongoing fiscal challenges.  ARLnow
