CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Arlington’s 41st Dark Star Park Day will begin at 9:00 a.m. on August 1 when locals gather at the park in Rosslyn to see Nancy Holt’s iconic sculpture cast a perfect shadow at 9:32 a.m.—marking the founding of Rosslyn in 1860. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Aspire After School Learning in Arlington lost nearly a third of its funding when federal cuts reduced its grants by $350,000, risking its ability to serve 155 students with free tutoring, meals & enrichment services. Program leaders say they must now seek new funding to keep the free support available to low-income families. DC News Now

- ➤ Arlington County Board adopted a new transportation vision statement at a Saturday meeting that supports alternatives to car travel and sets goals to update the master transportation plan by 2026. County officials also announced that nearly $400,000 from the opioid settlement fund will support a three-year epidemiologist role to boost the Arlington Addiction Recovery Initiative. ARLnow
- ➤ WETA will cut programming after Congress withdrew $1.1 billion from public broadcasting, which will remove $9 million from its budget for the next two fiscal years—about a 7% cut that will force changes in its shows. ARLnow
- ➤ Arlington County jail hosted a new program on July 15 that let about 20 local residents tour the facility and spend time with nearly a dozen detainees—this event aimed to show the common humanity of incarcerated people and is the first of its kind in Virginia, organized by the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice. - ➤ At the July 15 meeting of Arlington’s Park and Recreation Commission, Paul Gilbert of NOVA Parks urged officials to consider partnering with local community foundations instead of starting a new parks foundation from scratch. Gilbert said his agency’s earlier attempt in 2004 was too challenging + the existing model works well for managing park funds. ARLnow
- ➤ Arlington’s public art director Angela Adams retired after 31 years of service, leaving behind projects like the window installation at Ballston and the restored stained glass at a local church. - ➤ Arlington was ranked as the fittest city in America for the eighth straight year by the 2025 Fitness Index, with 67.2% of residents in excellent or very good health, 76.4% getting 7 hours or more sleep, and only 3.3% smoking.
