CRIME NEWS

  • Virginia State Police are searching for the driver of a 2020 Porsche with Montana tags that struck a trooper’s cruiser on southbound I-395 near Pentagon City early this morning—search teams using a K-9 unit and helicopter did not locate the suspect—and the injured trooper was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission is exploring ways to keep Arlington’s bus lanes clear after cars blocking the lanes have slowed buses for nearly a decade. At a July 17 meeting, senior program manager Vikram Sinha proposed using cameras on buses—similar to those on school buses—and traffic-signal priority, though ticketing drivers would require new law changes.  ARLnow
  • Arlington officials said the assisted living services at Culpepper Garden will be phased out next summer—affecting more than 70 residents—and that the decision reflects a broader national problem with funding care for vulnerable seniors. County leaders reached out to state and federal officials for support but admitted that current resources may not address the underlying issues.  ARLnow
  • Arlington officials said that narrow sidewalks on N. Glebe Road from I-66 to Langston Blvd are unsafe for pedestrians and bicyclists because they are only three feet wide — a design from an era when safety for walkers and riders was not a priority. County leaders also announced that free child safety seat checks will resume soon.  ARLnow

HEALTH NEWS

  • Arlington and D.C. topped the American College of Sports Medicine’s ranking of the nation’s fittest cities this year, with Arlington earning the top spot for the eighth consecutive year.
