- ➤ El Mercat Bar de Tapas will open its second location in mid-August at 1301 S. Joyce Street in Pentagon City's Westpost shopping center, replacing the former Asia Bistro. - ➤ Arlington County police reported that 19 vehicles were broken into overnight at a parking garage at Penrose Square on the 2500 block of 9th Road S, with some windows smashed and personal items stolen + no suspect has been identified. ARLnow
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Arlington residents spotted the invasive lanternfly in Ballston and along Langston Blvd this month as officials warned the insect is here to stay and its numbers will grow until natural predators help control it—residents are urged to squash the bug and destroy egg masses to slow its spread and protect local plants. - ➤ A multimillion-dollar project to add three new bus bays and improve sidewalks, crosswalks, bus shelters and utilities at East Falls Church Metro station will begin next week at 2001 N. Sycamore Street—34 parking spaces in the north lot will close for equipment staging and work will last through this fall. Later phases will upgrade bus loops and nearby intersections. ARLnow
- ➤ Arlington County Board will meet Saturday to consider proposals to relax commercial signage rules and lower speed limits from 30 mph to 25 mph on five roads. Other items include purchasing two homes for flood control, accepting a $1.94 million VDOT grant for an East Falls Church road project, and proposing grants to support seniors with cognitive decline, teen art entrepreneurship, a local climate partnership, and accessible traveler outreach. - ➤ A new report from apartmentrent.com shows Arlington has the fifth-highest median rent among the top 100 cities with rates above $2,600 as of June, with only four cities in California ranking higher.
