COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pentagon City's RiverHouse project is seeking public feedback on a planned one-acre park between S. Lynn Street and S. Joyce Street to encourage pedestrian movement and community gatherings in Arlington—residents can submit comments until Sunday. The park will be developed in two phases, with the first phase focusing on seating and natural elements.  ARLnow

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Alshami Restaurant opened in Bluemont serving authentic Syrian food by Damascus native Basema Chouban at 5216 Wilson Blvd—replacing last year's Ya Hala Bistro. The restaurant seats 60 with an outdoor patio—offers dine-in, pickup, delivery and catering and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.  ARLnow
  • Earlier this year, Arlington Economic Development launched the Arlington Tech Launchpad — a program that brought 15 high-growth tech companies from 12 countries to connect with local business leaders and community members. Many of these firms reported a lasting impression and are now planning to expand their presence here, while AED will launch a second cohort in spring to drive further innovation.  ARLnow

CULTURE NEWS

  • A series of artisan pop-up markets will begin this weekend in Crystal City at Water Park (1601 Crystal Drive) from 5-9 p.m., featuring at least 16 vendors with live music by Vinyl Horizon and a mobile bar cart offering cocktails. The event is the first in a summer series with additional dates on Aug. 16 and Sept. 20.  ARLnow
  • On Saturday, a new documentary called We Are Barcroft: A 60-Acre History of People & Place premiered at Columbia Pike Library in Arlington to share the stories of local residents from many countries. The 45-minute film and paired art exhibition, funded by Arlington County’s historic preservation grant program, offer a close look at the community’s rich heritage.  ARLnow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arlington Public Schools is planning a new policy that will notify parents (or guardians) within 24 hours after a student overdose, providing details about the substance and whether the event happened during school hours or school-related activities to meet a state law that started July 1. School Board members will review the change at a meeting on July 24 and will also address minor adjustments to student cell-phone use and appoint new staff in finance and school leadership.  ARLnow
