- ➤ Capital Doner opened its second restaurant last month at 1731 Wilson Blvd in Rosslyn, serving Turkish gyros, shawarma, falafel wraps and traditional desserts across from H-B Woodlawn. The restaurant seats about 50 and offers free parking in a Wilson Blvd strip mall — owner Gokhan Boltakke chose Rosslyn for its mix of business professionals, families and an international community. - ➤ Daydrift, a new cafe—market and bookstore, is set to open in Crystal City this summer at 1550 Crystal Drive where Mah-Ze-Dahr closed earlier this year. Operated by Episcope Hospitality, the business is hiring for cashier and barista roles. ARLnow

- ➤ Geremy Bridgeforth was convicted of breaking into three apartments in Courthouse and Virginia Square and sexually assaulting two women in April 2023—his sentencing is set for Oct 3. ARLnow
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ New research shows that Camp Casey—a 40-acre military camp near Columbia Pike and S. Courthouse Road—trained many Black soldiers in the Civil War. Researcher Michael Schaffner explained the camp’s role at a presentation at the Arlington History Museum, and county officials may soon place a historical marker at the site. ARLnow

- ➤ Arlington Public Schools will pilot a volunteer reading program this fall to boost literacy after data showed only 37% of English language learners passed the fourth-grade SOL and volunteer-assisted students scored 40% higher at one elementary school. The program championed by Arlington Parents for Education (modeled on a California program called Read With Me) will have final details shared soon by APS. WJLA
