COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week's adoptable pet is Pip—a 5-year-old terrier mix now living with ARLnow commentator Flood Czar—who is house-trained, great with kids, and a good apartment dog though she gets excited when she meets other dogs; Pip is available for adoption from Lost Dog Rescue.  ARLnow
  • A new partnership between the Arlington County Fair board and the County Department of Parks and Recreation means county staff will handle operations while volunteers focus on competitive exhibits. The five-day fair will take place from August 13 to 17 at Thomas Jefferson Community Center and will feature a new beer garden, improved traffic flow and free shuttle service from Ballston Mall parking garage.  ARLnow
  • Arlington police announced the loss of retired K-9 Duke, a 12-year-old German Shepherd who served as a patrol and narcotics detection dog from 2014 until retiring in 2022 - he spent his retirement years at home and greeting his partner at the bus stop.   • After a four-day trial and two hours of jury deliberations, Arlington Commonwealth’s Attorney said a jury found Geremy Bridgeforth guilty of sexual assault and burglary charges linked to multiple nighttime break-ins at Quincy Plaza and Courthouse Plaza—confirming serious offenses.  WJLA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Arlington office space interest is falling as a CBRE report shows over 26.6% of available space was empty in Q2 with only one new building under construction. Local leaders plan to repurpose older properties for housing and other uses to meet modern tenant needs + support a competitive market.  ARLnow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Arlington, Falls Church, and parts of the D.C. area are under a Flood Watch today from 2 p.m. until midnight as heavy storms are expected to cause flash flooding on saturated ground + the National Weather Service warns that slow-moving storms may drop up to 6 inches of rain in low-lying areas.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Traffic increased on the inbound Theodore Roosevelt Bridge between Arlington and D.C. when construction cut eastbound lanes from four to three on Monday, affecting I-66, U.S. Route 50 and the George Washington Memorial Parkway until early next year — further work will extend the bridge’s lifespan with additional lane reductions planned.  WTOP

  • Arlington homebuyers can explore ten move-in ready townhomes priced under $1 million that offer modern updates and smart layouts—suitable for first-time buyers or those planning to upsize or downsize.  ARLnow
  • The Arlington County Board will review several redevelopment projects that may add 1,535 new residential units and 344 hotel rooms to Rosslyn, Ballston, Shirlington, Crystal City and Virginia Square, with most proposals on Saturday and one on July 22. The plans include the One Rosslyn project—with three new towers replacing older offices and cash contributions for affordable housing—and conversions at other sites.  ARLnow
