  • Arlington resident Silvi Pomeroy is raising money on GoFundMe to bring Buddy, an abused stray dog from Albania, to the United States—Buddy is quarantining at a veterinary hospital in Tirana and will be flown over once he is cleared for travel.  ARLnow
  • Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Steven Cade will perform at Arlington's Bridges to Independence on Monday as part of his Giving Guitars Tour, where he will host a Q&A and donate a signed guitar to support the shelter's programs. The tour has raised over $250,000 for more than 140 organizations since 2021 — and his Arlington stop will be his final visit in a busy week of shows in nearby communities.  ARLnow
  • Arlington residents can vote on the best kid-friendly activities as part of the ARLnow Readers’ Choice awards with submissions open until two weeks from now—if a favorite is missing, residents may write it in. Voting is also underway for the Best Barbecue Restaurant, which closes next Friday at 9 a.m., and the results for the Best Bar category have been announced.  ARLnow

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Virginia will offer a three-day sales tax holiday from Aug. 1 through Aug. 3 on qualifying school supplies, clothing & footwear, hurricane preparedness items, and select Energy Star and WaterSense products. Maryland will have a week-long tax break from Aug. 10 through Aug. 16 that will remove its 6% tax on clothing & footwear costing $100 or less.  NBC Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Robots from Kiwibot began a 20-day pilot earlier this month to scan Arlington sidewalks from Ballston to Rosslyn for cracks, weeds, and gaps using laser scanners, mobile mapping, AI and machine learning. The county will use the results to decide if the technology will be adopted for its 2028 sidewalk assessment.  ARLnow
