GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Skanska and FlatironDragados will start construction later this month on a new four-track rail bridge connecting Arlington and D.C.—a $1 billion project set to expand the rail corridor by adding a one-mile link from East Potomac Park to L’Enfant Interlocking and improve train service, with work finishing by 2030.  ARLnow
  • Arlington’s Congressman Don Beyer won the National Press Club’s Press and Politicians Spelling Bee on June 25 when his winning word was stygian—meaning extremely dark. Although he misspelled espalier once, Beyer had previously won the contest and led his team of five against six journalists in D.C.  ARLnow
  • Federal cuts to Medicaid and food assistance are expected to strain Arlington’s social services—county officials and nonprofits are preparing to help residents who may soon face tougher conditions. The planned cuts may force these groups to fill the gaps as demand for health and food support grows.  ARLnow
  • The Arlington County Emergency Communications Center started using Amazon Connect in 2023 to move non-emergency calls to the right resources—misdirected calls dropped by 15,750 in the first quarter compared to the previous year.  WJLA

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In June, Arlington’s median rent rose 0.3% from May, with two-bedroom units now costing over $3,000 and overall rents increasing 3.6% since January and 2.6% compared to last year—data from Apartment List shows Arlington ranks fifth nationwide and remains the only DC metro area with two-bedroom rents above $3,000. This steep rise also places rental costs 89% above the national median and 19% above the DC region’s median.  ARLnow
  • Arlington Transportation Commission approved an 845-unit redevelopment project by Penzance for a 2.3-acre site at 1901 and 1911 Fort Myer Drive in Rosslyn, which will replace office buildings with nearly 960,000 square feet of living space and 14,500 square feet of retail. The plan omits a new skywalk over eastbound Langston Blvd — a decision based on staff concerns over pedestrian safety and cost — and will be reviewed further at upcoming Planning Commission and County Board meetings.  ARLnow
