CRIME NEWS

  • Board member Maureen Coffey said she received about 10 threatening messages over the weekend that warned of harm to her and her family — she is working with the Department of Public Safety to follow up on the threats.  WTOP

CULTURE NEWS

  • Communities across the DMV will celebrate Juneteenth with events like parades, poetry slams, and cultural festivals. In Arlington, the 2nd Annual Juneteenth Community Day will be held on June 19 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (at 1330 S Fair St.).  WJLA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Arlington homeowners can apply for free native trees or shrubs from EcoAction Arlington’s Tree Planting Program and Tree Canopy Equity Program until Monday, June 23. Eligible applicants include owners of single-family homes, townhouses, condos and places of worship, while residents in 13 under-resourced neighborhoods may select from various species such as American sycamores, sugarberry trees and oaks — the nonprofit will plant 200 trees and 50 shrubs across the county this fall.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the June 14 board meeting, county officials accepted a $30,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services to fund new training for first responders after traumatic events and discussed a $50,000 package to preserve staff for the Aspire! Afterschool Learning program. The board also approved a memorandum with EcoAction Arlington that will take effect July 1—boosting funds for a volunteer program and a mobile app.  ARLnow
  • Arlington’s new Human Rights Commission held a brief meeting last week to discuss its limited role after the County Board fired all its previous members last August. Commission Chair Jimmy McBirney said the group can only address discrimination by private entities — its next meeting is scheduled for July 10.  ARLnow
  • Early returns from the 2025 Virginia primary are coming in and officials will update final results once all votes are counted—voters can check back for complete figures.  DC News Now
