COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arlington Thrive has launched the Federal Worker Resilience Fund to provide up to $750 for rent, utilities and other essential needs to federal workers affected by recent policy changes. The fund was created last week with a generous private donation and is available on a first-come, first-served basis to Arlington residents who meet income and documentation requirements.  ARLnow

  • A vegan soul food chain revived its menu in a ghost kitchen at Four Mile Food Co. near Shirlington after its original D.C. location closed last year. Owner Avishadye Williams said the business started in February 2024 and relies on online orders plus word-of-mouth for steady growth.  ARLnow

CRIME NEWS

  • A police officer was assaulted when 42-year-old DC woman Muronji Inman-Mccraw grabbed him near Pentagon City Metro Station on Friday afternoon during a fare evasion stop—she was charged with assault on an officer and obstruction of justice, and no one was injured.  WJLA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • It now costs a median $36,000 per year to rent a two-bedroom apartment in Arlington, with one-bedroom units at $2,488 and two-bedroom units at $3,006 in May. The county’s median rent rose 4% year-over-year to $2,642—making Arlington the highest rental market in the Washington region.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington County leaders may soon face more pressure to be open with developers after the Arlington County Civic Federation passed a resolution last week calling for a clear written process to decide community benefits from rezoning and land-use changes (delegate Jack Spilsbury helped craft the resolution). The group also elected a new leadership team with Nicholas Giacobbe as president and nine board members starting July 1.  ARLnow
  • On Monday, Metro ran automatic trains on all six Metrorail lines for the first weekday in 16 years but switched to manual control in above-ground areas due to heavy rain—trains in tunnels ran automatically with an operator closing the doors. The transit agency said ATO gives smoother rides and can boost speeds to 65—75 mph in outer areas when conditions are right.  WJLA
  • Claudia Alvarenga Espana, a Northern Virginia mother detained and deported to Guatemala, has returned to fight her deportation in court today. Her husband warned that if she loses her case, the entire family will be forced to leave—raising serious concerns over their future in the U.S.  NBC Washington
