Good morning, Arlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 14th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, road closures block several Arlington streets due to a military parade celebrating the U.S. Army's 250th birthday and the Columbia Pike Blues Festival—officers will enforce detours from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., so drivers should plan for delays and watch for temporary no parking signs. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and follow posted instructions.  DC News Now
  • Animal Welfare League of Arlington said that two-year-old Pickles McButterpants, a mixed-breed dog who is affectionate and house-savvy, is now available for free adoption thanks to a donation. Pickles is in foster care and chosen as AWLA’s pet of the week, and his contest entry could see his image on a crowler produced in August—he needs a gentle home where he feels safe.  ARLnow

CULTURE NEWS

  • The ARLnow podcast episode released on June 13 discussed local Arlington news including a debate on how to pronounce ARLnow, road closures for a military parade, ongoing retail theft concerns and recognition for local restaurants — the hosts Lene, Dan and Vern reviewed these stories with fresh insights from the past week.  ARLnow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arlington school officials say APS’s on-time graduation rate for the Class of 2025 is expected to hit a record 95% when final figures are tabulated in the fall—preliminary data shared on June 12 show that the county’s three main high schools have a 97.8% rate and nearly 2,000 graduates were recorded as of mid-June.  ARLnow
  • The Arlington School Board voted unanimously last night (Thursday) to select Alexander Duncan III (currently the executive principal at Alexandria City High School) as the new principal of Washington-Liberty High School despite a letter showing support from 158 staff for interim principal Christian Willmore, and Duncan will begin on July 16. Some teachers questioned the decision and requested data to show if staff recommendations had been overlooked in past hiring processes.  ARLnow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local real estate data shows that Arlington homes had an average price of $511 per square foot in May—up 1.2% from last year and overall home sales rose 3.1% from May 2024. Pending sales increased by more than 20% and a shift toward more single-family homes may boost the market if mortgage rates fall amid economic uncertainty.  ARLnow
