COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portia Clark, a long-time civic leader in Green Valley, received the new ARLnow Cup at Tuesday's final Arlington County Civic Federation meeting for the 2024-25 year as a thank-you for her decades of work in preserving local history and supporting community programs. She led efforts that included the creation of a farmers market and guided civic projects during a time of rapid change while other groups were honored with community impact awards.  ARLnow

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jennifer Rykaczewski, a Madison Manor resident, founded Affordable Skies in December to push for more affordable air fares and better transparency in the airline industry. The nonpartisan group, which has already gained over 1,000 members and urged lawmakers to pass bills like the Fast Lane for Youths Act, will hold webinars and counseling events to help educate travelers + give them a seat at the table.  ARLnow

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Army’s 250th anniversary celebration includes a parade, festival and fireworks starting at 9:45 p.m. Saturday at the National Mall, and Arlington residents can watch the display from spots like Gravelly Point or Arlington Ridge Park — other viewing options include the Lincoln Memorial steps and a dinner cruise on the Wharf.  DC News Now
  • The Arlington Players kicked off their 75th season by celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Peanuts characters with an outdoor performance of 'You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown' at Lubber Run Amphitheater—weather aided two shows despite a canceled Sunday matinee.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FBI officials are looking to move its national training academy from Quantico to Huntsville—this change would move the 10-week program 660 miles to Redstone Arsenal and is part of a plan to shift law enforcement resources. Other training programs will remain at Quantico as officials study the potential move.  WJLA
  • Crews are repairing several GW Parkway bridges in Arlington under a major rehabilitation project — including work at Pimmit Run, Donaldson Run, Windy Run, Gulf Branch, Spout Run Southbound Arch, and Chain Bridge Road interchange — as repairs continue this month. The southbound lane will be closed from 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 21 until 6 p.m. on Sunday with the same schedule next weekend while a separate stretch of GW Parkway is closed for a military parade from 6 p.m. today until 6 a.m. on Sunday.  ARLnow

The new developer filed amendments to reduce parking and retail space and asked for a three-year extension as county staff review the changes — the adjustments address market challenges like higher construction costs and tariffs.  ARLnow
