- ➤ Freddie Lutz, owner of Freddie’s Beach Bar, and Johnny Cervantes will wed on a float at the D.C. WorldPride Parade on Saturday, June 14th. Virginia state Sen. - ➤ Horace Willis, who worked 28 years at Washington-Liberty and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame, has been named the head coach of the girls varsity basketball team after Maddy DeCou left for Marymount University. Willis said he is excited and nervous to lead the team that ended last season with a 17-9 record and looks to build on their strong play. ARLnow
- ➤ On June 5, the Yorktown Patriots won the 6D North Region tournament final by defeating the Washington-Liberty Generals 2-1 on their home field—senior Reese Montgomery and junior Claire Scott scored early while the Generals cut the lead late, and both teams earned spots in the Class 6 state tournament. - ➤ Wakefield High senior rower Isabelle Young-Smith capped her career with four state titles—three on the varsity eight—and now will attend Indiana University where she may try to join the crew team as a walk-on. ARLnow
- ➤ Wakefield Warriors earned a spot in the Class 6 state tournament after reaching the final of the 6D North Region tournament where they lost 2-0 to the Herndon Hornets. Coach Eddie Carrasquillo said his seniors, who helped win key overtime and penalty shootout games (their second berth ever), will represent Arlington as the only team from the area (state play is set to begin soon). - ➤ At the regional outdoor track meet at South Lakes, Washington-Liberty Generals placed third in both girls' and boys' competitions with two individual champions while Wakefield and Yorktown each had an event winner. The Generals' boys scored 62 points and the girls 57 points, finishing close behind the top teams. ARLnow
