Good morning, Arlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 6th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arlington YMCA patrons worry about maintenance issues like a leaky roof and potholes as the planned redevelopment remains on hold at the Virginia Square facility. Site plans filed in August 2022 call for an 88,000-square-foot recreation center and a seven-story, 374-unit apartment building — the applicant must resubmit updated plans for the project to move forward.  ARLnow

BUSINESS NEWS

  • JLL Experience Management announced that Concorde, a new 12,000-square-foot event center located at 2011 Crystal Drive, will be ready for bookings in January and open in early 2026. The facility will feature a 300-seat presentation hall and five smaller meeting rooms as part of a renovation project led by JBG Smith.  ARLnow
  • McDonald’s on Langston Blvd has been torn down to clear the way for a new, modernized restaurant that will feature self-ordering kiosks and a side-by-side drive-thru with two ordering lanes — a change expected to ease traffic backups. Construction will begin the week of June 23 and the restaurant is set to re-open in October.  ARLnow
  • John Massoud, owner of Arlington Blue Top Cabs since 1984, is asking the County Board to approve the sale of the company to employees Wahid Raheem and Mindy Gaber after 41 years of service—this change comes as the new owners plan to add wheelchair-accessible cabs and keep 24/7 service to support elderly riders while Arlington's taxi industry recovers from pandemic losses and increased competition.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flights at Reagan National Airport will be suspended for about 1.5 hours—from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. on June 14—to allow for the Army’s 250th anniversary parade that will feature 6,600 soldiers, 150 military vehicles, 50 helicopters, a jet flyover and Golden Knights paratroopers, with a fireworks display planned later.  WTOP
  • The Arlington Housing Choice Voucher Program’s 5-Year PHA Plan for 2025–2029 and 2025 Annual PHA Plan are now available for review online or at the DHS main office on 2100 Washington Blvd. A public hearing is scheduled for July 25 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the DHS lower-level auditorium, and written comments can be sent via email.  ARLnow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The U.S. housing market is shifting as nearly 500,000 more homes are listed than there are buyers—the largest gap since 2013—due to rising interest rates, high prices, and changing lifestyles. In Arlington and nearby areas, inventory is growing while buyer demand remains soft with mortgage rates near 7%, and experts urge sellers to price competitively while advising buyers to consider new construction and better loan options.  DC News Now
