- ➤ Animal Welfare League of Arlington + The Board Room brewery in Lyon Park are hosting a pet photo contest for pet owners to submit pictures of cats, dogs or small companions until Monday, June 30. The contest costs $25 to enter + $1 per vote, has already raised over $8,000, and will announce winners within 24 hours after closing to help fund local animal care. ARLnow

- ➤ Firefighters from Arlington and neighboring jurisdictions battled a townhouse blaze on the 1600 block of S. Taylor Street in Douglas Park that sent dark smoke into the blue sky and produced hazardous floor conditions; most of the fire was out just after 10 a.m. yesterday and no injuries were reported. - ➤ Jeff Smith, owner of Twins Ace Hardware, signed a lease for a store on the ground floor of The Zoe apartments in Crystal City—close to Amazon HQ2 and other new developments. The store will open soon to offer a range of items including tools, paint, home goods and gardening supplies to the growing community. WTOP

- ➤ The Arlington Historical Society Museum reopened in May with a new exhibition on lawlessness from 1890 to 1910 and now displays Crandal Mackey’s inoperable shotgun—used in 1904 raids against gambling and vice in Rosslyn. The artifact was donated by the County Sheriff’s Office in May 2021 and brings an important piece of our local history back into public view. ARLnow
- ➤ A banned book drive at Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ collected 84 banned titles for its Rohrer Memorial Library last month in response to rising challenges against literature. Member Betsy Withycombe purposely chose surprising books like Charlotte’s Web (to raise awareness) to promote free speech and diverse viewpoints. ARLnow
