- ➤ Arlington’s VFW Post 3150 got a new leader when Michael Cantwell was sworn in at a Memorial Day ceremony at its Courthouse headquarters to guide outreach efforts for veterans and youth. The 91-year-old group, revitalized after Covid and now with nearly 700 members, elected additional officers to help connect veterans with health and mental health resources. ARLnow

- ➤ An e-scooter sparked an apartment fire at 801 N. Wakefield Street in Bluemont near Ballston at 1:30 p.m. today but a sprinkler system stopped the blaze as firefighters put out the fire and the Fire Marshal’s Office investigates its cause. ARLnow
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On May 29, Arlington police reported that a group of two to three masked men broke into eight Rosslyn and Courthouse businesses by smashing glass doors and windows to steal safes and cash drawers (including Oasis Nail Spa, Virginia ABC, Sawatdee Thai, and SeoulSpice Korean Kitchen), and the investigation is ongoing. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The DHS has demanded that several Virginia counties, including Arlington and Fairfax, review their policies and work with ICE after naming them sanctuary jurisdictions. Local officials argue that the label is misleading — they say they follow all federal, state and local laws while protecting their communities. WJLA
- ➤ At a May 20 meeting, the Zoning Ordinance Committee looked at proposals to let Arlington commercial buildings post larger and more flexible signs by increasing allowed sizes and placements while keeping restrictions near residential and federal areas—changes that will go to the Planning Commission in July before County Board review. This draft proposal aims to reduce delays for new businesses and ease long-standing red tape for signage installation. ARLnow
