- ➤ After months of tenant complaints and county meetings, Washington Housing Conservancy switched to a new management company at Crystal House 1 and 2 on S. Eads Street last month—residents say slow repairs and ongoing issues still affect the complex. - ➤ Clarendon-born South Block named restaurant veteran and Fairfax resident Steve Heeley as its new president to guide its national expansion. The chain plans to grow from its 19 DC area stores to add outlets in Charlotte, with one location expected to open late 2025. ARLnow
- ➤ After 20 years at the Arlington Drafthouse at 2903 Columbia Pike, the owners stepped down and longtime manager Pete Fejeran and his wife Kathryn McAbee took over operations—promising to keep the venue’s comedy shows, first-run movies, and community events intact. - ➤ Leesburg man Fredy Gonzalez-Esquivel, 22, was arrested Tuesday morning for firing bullets at a car on I-95 in Prince George's County on Memorial Day at 6:30 p.m.—he faces attempted second-degree murder and related charges and now awaits extradition to Maryland. NBC Washington
- ➤ A 27-year-old Arlington man was accused of assaulting a child and threatening two other children with a gun near Barcroft Apartments on Columbia Pike on May 24th — he later attempted to grab an officer’s gun during his arrest and faces charges of attempted disarming of a law enforcement officer, assault and battery, and public intoxication. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Arlington leaders met with county staff and Board members on May 19 to discuss how planned federal cuts to Medicaid, food assistance and other safety net programs may affect over $40 million in annual funding. The state delegates will return to Richmond in September to seek help from state officials—though they warned that significant relief may be limited. ARLnow
- ➤ Del. Patrick Hope and challenger Arjoon Srikanth debated the new historic preservation law at an Arlington forum on May 21—Srikanth argued that the law will delay housing projects such as the Melwood redevelopment near Crystal City, while Hope said it does not. Hope also said he requested an advisory opinion from the attorney general’s office, with a ruling expected within a month. ARLnow
- ➤ An Arlington review board voted unanimously 13-0 against a redevelopment proposal for the Inn of Rosslyn site at 1601 Fairfax Drive because the design does not reflect the mid-century modern style of the nearly 70-year-old motel (listed as Important in the Historic Resources Inventory). Monument Realty’s plan for an eight-story, 142-unit building will likely be revised before it goes to the County Board this fall. ARLnow
