COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers from R-Dogs installed new play equipment at Gateway Park’s dog park at 1300 Langston Blvd on Sunday—adding ramps, tunnels and a 900-pound platform that cost around $6,000. The project received a $5,000 grant from the Molina Foundation—marking the first step in plans for a dog park expansion with construction set to begin in 2026.  ARLnow

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating an armed carjacking on May 17 near Taco Bell in Courthouse after a man in his parked Toyota was robbed at 3:08 a.m. by a male and female suspect in all-black clothing and sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries while his car was later abandoned nearby—other incidents include a man assaulting a paramedic in Ballston, a suspect discharging a firearm on S. Veitch Street on May 16 that damaged nearby property, and a group burglarizing an ABC store in Clarendon this morning—with investigations ongoing.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington’s representative on the Metro funding panel said he opposes a region-wide sales tax and supports each jurisdiction finding its own funds for an extra $500 million to $600 million a year. Work groups will meet and develop a final plan by fall so that improvements can begin in late 2027—local officials in Fairfax and Loudoun have different views on the best approach.  ARLnow
  • D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton is calling for new restrictions on military helicopter flights near Reagan National after a January 29 midair collision killed 67 people—she sent a May 16 letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy asking that only flights for the president, vice president or a national security emergency be exempt from the ADS-B transponder rule.  WTOP
  • Arlington lawmakers, including county board members and state delegates, are assessing the damage from federal workforce cuts that affect one in five local residents and are planning strategies to support them. Board Chairman Takis Karantonis warned that losing skilled workers could lead to long-term economic impacts—prompting calls for immediate action.  WTOP
  • Metro received approval from the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission to run automated trains on the Green and Yellow lines—joining the automated Red Line—and no exact timetable has been set for the switch.  NBC Washington
