ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters are responding to a significant gas line rupture in Arlington’s Glencarlyn neighborhood, where a county crew using an excavator reportedly punctured a gas main on the 5500 block of 3rd Street S. between Glencarlyn Library + Glencarlyn Park; road closures, evacuations, and safety checks continue as crews from Washington Gas are awaited.  ARLnow
  • Arlington firefighter Captain David Zuniga lost his home in a fire last week when his daughter spotted the flames early and he helped neighbors escape & a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $35K to assist his family with temporary housing and everyday needs.  ARLnow
  • Crews are cleaning up fallen trees—hazardous debris is still being removed—on the George Washington Parkway between Belle View Boulevard and Alexandria Avenue in Fort Hunt after Friday's storm, forcing detours that led to heavy traffic on Monday morning. Officials say the road will remain closed through the morning rush today as two people died when trees hit their cars.  NBC Washington

  • A Washington Capitals player was pepper sprayed and arrested on May 17 on the 3100 block of Clarendon Blvd after an altercation near Big Tony's Pizzeria & was charged with public intoxication before being released by Arlington County Jail.  ARLnow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Last Thursday, the Arlington School Board approved an $844.6 million budget that keeps the Integration Station program and full-time library aides after public feedback raised concerns over planned cuts & the new plan, up 2.2% from last year, includes staff bonuses and changes that take effect on July 1.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Army Sgt. 1st Class Andrew Jay will take his final walk at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on June 2 as part of Memorial Day events that honor fallen service members. He has guarded the site for two years—standing watch 24 hours a day in all weather while performing the traditional changing ceremony that many visitors admire.  ARLnow

HEALTH NEWS

  • State Sen. Barbara Favola, representing most of Arlington County, is undergoing treatment for uterine cancer after her successful hysterectomy on May 16 at Virginia Hospital Center—she said she expects to continue her Senate duties during her upcoming chemotherapy sessions.  ARLnow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Residents at Crystal House Apartments said at last week’s Tenant-Landlord Commission meeting that the new Avenue 5 management has not improved communication, maintenance, or trash collection after responsibility shifted from Cushman and Wakefield. Avenue 5 reported that it installed a new property manager and boosted staffing to clear a backlog (residents remain concerned about service delays) (commission members urged the firm to share future outreach plans).  ARLnow
