Good morning, Arlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 16th of May.
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters rescued occupants using ladders after a fire broke out just before 5 a.m. at a garden apartment complex on the 1000 block of S. Quebec Street along Columbia Pike — medics evaluated five people and two received treatment at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. ARLnow
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Developers say that Ballston’s Macy’s will be torn down in a few months (excavation will start this fall) as part of a redevelopment to build 553 apartments, ground-floor retail and a grocery store (the store has not been chosen yet). Pedestrians and drivers will face sidewalk closures and overhead protection along Wilson Blvd for at least two more years. ARLnow
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The FAA met with Pentagon officials Thursday to review possible restrictions on military helicopter flights near Reagan National Airport. The agency said the move follows a January 29 midair collision that killed 67 people and a May 1 incident that made controllers abort landings, and it will fix a broken hotline linking the airport & Pentagon. - ➤ Metro officials are testing a system that lets Metrorail riders pay by tapping a credit or debit card instead of using a SmarTrip card — the trial is underway at 11 stations and will launch by the end of May if tests succeed. WJLA
- ➤ County Board members met on Tuesday, May 13 to honor the legacy of Queen City—a community displaced in 1942 for Pentagon construction—and expressed regret that Arlington did not better support its over 900 residents. A historic marker will be installed at Army Navy Drive and S. Joyce Street with its unveiling planned for June, while Board members also recognized Tree Stewards’ volunteer work and marked the centennial of Ellen Bozman’s birth. ARLnow
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ May is National Stroke Awareness Month as Arlington residents learn to spot stroke signs like drooping face, weak arms, and slurred speech so they can call 9-1-1 quickly. Health officials advise lowering risks by not smoking + eating healthy foods + staying active. The Arlington Connection
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Rooney Properties bought The Ellipse at Ballston at 4350 N. Fairfax Drive last month for $20.2 million and said the nine-story office building may be changed into apartments while it still leases space.
