- ➤ The Washington-Liberty Generals won a close 6-5 extra inning contest on the road after scoring a decisive run in the 10th inning—while the Yorktown Patriots rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the final two innings to beat the South Lakes Seahawks and notch their fourth consecutive win. ARLnow
- ➤ Dick Abood — a veteran coach turning 69 this month — has dedicated 38 years to high school lacrosse at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington and continues as an assistant coach for the junior-varsity boys team, saying he loves the challenge and energy of the game. ARLnow
- ➤ In a recent Arlington high school lacrosse game, twin sisters Addison and Emily Schimmel faced off on opposing teams as Addison played for Washington-Liberty and Emily played for Wakefield. Washington-Liberty won the game 20—5 with Emily scoring three goals while Addison contributed two goals and one assist. ARLnow
- ➤ Arlington’s two swim teams will begin their summer season in mid-June with the Army Navy Patriots holding their opening meet on June 17 at Chevy Chase Stingrays in Maryland and the Washington Golf Lightning hosting the Avenel Alligators on the same day. The swim regular season ends in mid-July while diving events will start on June 16 and end on July 25—Army Navy is set to dive at Washington Golf on July 9. ARLnow
- ➤ Novahoops.com named Arlington high school basketball players to its all-Northern Virginia freshman and sophomore teams for the 2024-25 season—players include Potomac School’s Sabrina Anderson, who reached 1,000 career points, and Bishop O’Connell’s Mia Morrill as a reserve, with several public school players also earning honorable mentions. - ➤ The Arlington community remembered former O’Connell girls basketball coach Jim Spiridopoulos, who died April 29 at 80 after a long battle with cancer. A celebration of his life will be held at the end of May to honor his many years of coaching and lasting impact on hundreds of players. ARLnow
- ➤ Arlington Wrestling Club performed strongly at the Virginia Wrestling Association tournament—held at Heritage High School in Lynchburg—as Basheer Hadi won the USA junior boys 185 freestyle and Greco divisions while Cameron Millsapps captured the USA junior freestyle girls 155 weight class; nine club wrestlers qualified for the national tournament in July. - ➤ On May 10, the Wakefield girls novice four crew won a race at Occoquan Reservoir, finishing in 6:29.1 ahead of five other shells while Battlefield finished second. Arlington school teams also placed well, with Yorktown High’s boys freshman four and boys third eight finishing among the top teams. ARLnow
- ➤ Bishop O’Connell Knights won two games at Tuckahoe Park—with a 13-0 win over the Cardinals and an 8-0 win over the Panthers—to reach the championship game, and the undefeated team will face St. Mary’s Ryken in the final to continue its 70-game win streak. ARLnow
