COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arlington Palooza will return on May 17 from 11 a.m.—4 p.m. at Lubber Run Community Center and park at 300 N. Park Drive with live music from DuPont Brass and local performers along with food trucks and artisans. The free outdoor festival will also offer family activities such as storytime, dance lessons, and animal encounters and spots can be reserved online while interested volunteers may email the organizers.  ARLnow
  • Arlington’s namesake U.S. Navy ship hosted a cruise for 9/11 families and responders, with active and retired workers from Arlington County, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, and the Arlington Emergency Communications Center joining the event. Navy Capt. Ian Scaliatine organized the trip through the USS Arlington Community Alliance and retired Arlington police Capt. Kevin Reardon praised the crew for honoring the ship’s legacy.  ARLnow

CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded around 7 p.m. on Saturday to a shot fired into the air at Wakefield High School—detaining a suspect in his 20s or 30s driving a silver BMW on S. Dinwiddie Street, recovering a firearm, and reporting no injuries.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 26, Arlington held a dedication ceremony at Fire Station #8 on Langston Blvd, opening a new 20,000-square-foot facility that is set to serve until the mid-2070s. County officials and community leaders honored its historic legacy from segregation times—where Black volunteer firefighters first paved the way—and stressed that local debate and data kept the station at its vital location.  ARLnow
  • Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board proposed $13.7 million for Arlington projects in Fiscal Year 2026 that include upgrades to ART bus safety, a microtransit pilot, and improvements to the Washington Blvd—Arlington Blvd interchange, a site with several past crashes. Staff are gathering public feedback on the draft plan and will discuss the proposals at a meeting on May 8 at 5 p.m. at the Virginia Department of Transportation Building in Fairfax County.  ARLnow
