EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A junior at Washington-Liberty High School completed an Eagle Scout project that built a 1,300 square-foot gravel shot-put pit over two Saturdays—improving the track-and-field facilities for girls and boys ahead of the outdoor season. The pit was finished in time for the outdoor season’s Arlington County Championship on April 8. ARLnow

- ➤ Torey Ortmayer stepped down as Yorktown high school swimming coach after eight seasons to launch Hydra Aquatics — a small year-round club at the Tuckahoe Recreation Club pool in McLean that will open this fall. He will still coach the summer swim team. ARLnow
- ➤ During spring break at Myrtle Beach, the Yorktown Patriots played seven softball games and won four contests, scoring 58 runs with wins like 13-1, 11-1, and 11-4. The Bishop O’Connell Knights remained undefeated with a 14-0 win over Holy Cross in Washington Catholic Athletic Conference play. ARLnow
- ➤ Two Yorktown High School seniors, Cambyses Khani and Basheer Hadi, earned Class 6 all-state honors after strong finishes at the winter state-championship meet—Hadi placed second in the 298-pound division with a 42–5 record and Khani placed third at 120 with a 37–6 record, and both were the only Arlington public-school wrestlers selected. - ➤ Arlington's 12-under Sage girls softball team won the Crushers Smackdown tournament in Nokesville over two days with a 5-1 record. In the championship game they beat the Vienna Smash 14-1 as every player reached base and Harper Bryant homered and pitched a one-hitter—Natalie Wellner hit an inside-the-park home run. ARLnow
- ➤ Wakefield Warriors beat Marshall Statesmen 8-6 in a rainy game before spring break—even while missing key players due to breaks and college visits. The win snapped a three-match losing streak and improved their record to 5-3, setting up tough upcoming matches against Washington-Liberty and Yorktown. ARLnow
- ➤ The Swanson Admirals won Arlington County’s middle-school team swimming championship at Wakefield High School by scoring 1,397 points. Triple race-winner Alexandra Bristow and double race-winner Vivian Fatouros led the team while Dorothy Hamm and Williamsburg finished with 1,210 and 932 points respectively. ARLnow
- ➤ High school baseball teams competed in spring-break tournaments in recent days. The Yorktown Patriots, posting a 7—5 record, finished 3—2 at Patriot Park with wins over Lightridge, Potomac Falls and Riverside while the Washington-Liberty Generals earned 2—2 shutout wins and the Wakefield Warriors won their first two games; the Bishop O’Connell Knights entered spring break with a 14—4 overall record. - ➤ Campbell Knisely, a sophomore on the Bishop O'Connell High School boys soccer team, was chosen for the under-17 U.S. Olympic Development Program National Select Team and is training in Italy this month—he earned his spot after progressing through district, state and regional camps. His strong play on a 17-5 team helped his team reach the semifinals of conference and Division I state tournaments—he now competes against top European Youth Academies. ARLnow
- ➤ Arlington Wrestling Club now has about 50 members and holds one practice session per week at Wakefield High School wrestling room—led by coach John Leinberger and supported by local coaches. On April 19, the club hosted its second annual Warrior Classic at Wakefield with 32 teams, where every wrestler was guaranteed four freestyle matches and a Greco-Roman exhibition. ARLnow
