COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arlington Public Library and the police will host a sing-along screening of Wicked at Courthouse Library located at 2100 Clarendon Blvd on April 19 (12 p.m. to 3 p.m.) where popcorn and drinks will be provided and children must have a chaperone older than 21.  DC News Now
  • Arlington Girl Scouts from Ashlawn Elementary School used funds from cookie sales to install bright red safety flags at two busy Wilson Blvd intersections in February to help pedestrians cross safely. The troop earned the Bronze Award from Girl Scouts of the USA and will celebrate their achievement at a spring bridging ceremony.  ARLnow

  • An Arlington establishment trading as Yu Noodles at 1515 Wilson BLVD, STE 102 applied for a permit from the Virginia ABC yesterday at 5:30 a.m.—the application seeks a Retail Restaurant or Caterer license to sell and manufacture alcoholic beverages consumed on and off premises.  ARLnow

CULTURE NEWS

  • Animal-loving filmmakers will host the 2025 New York Cat & Dog Film Festivals at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse on Columbia Pike on Tuesday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 7 with a 6 p.m. pre-show that features adoptable animals and vendors. Admission is $38 per event and proceeds will support the Animal Welfare League of Arlington.  ARLnow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • APS is reviewing a Feb. 14 letter from the Education Department that set new nondiscrimination rules while a lawsuit has pushed the deadline later this month — Superintendent Francisco Durán said the district stands by its current practices and will watch an April 17 hearing for changes. The school district will send text messages to parents for students missing 10 and 15 days starting April 22 and will offer an online attendance report from April 28 to help reduce chronic absences.  ARLnow
  • Arlington Public Schools Superintendent Francisco Durán said Thursday that the district may delay adopting its $845 million budget from May 1 to May 15 due to about $2.5 million of state funds remaining unsettled — federal revenue is also unclear — and the new budget will take effect July 1.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WMATA adopted a stricter policy to ban Metro riders for crimes, and the new rules will take effect June 2. Under the policy, first offenses will result in a 45-day ban, second offenses in a 90-day ban and third offenses in a 365-day ban—meant to address repeat and violent offenders.  ARLnow

  • Arlington condo sales in March ranged from a 2-bed, 2.5-bath unit selling for $1,770,000 at 1881 N Nash N #911 to a studio that sold for $223,000 at 3000 Spout Run Pkwy—Jean Ropp noted that prices varied notably among other listings.  ARLnow

  • Arlington resident Torri Huske, a 2021 Yorktown High School graduate, won her first individual NCAA gold medal in the women’s national championships as she finished first in the 200 individual-medley for Stanford University—she recorded a time of 1:49.87. She also placed second in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle races and helped her team secure a high overall finish.  ARLnow
