GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia's governor race is officially set as former congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D) and current Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) secured their party nominations last weekend.  DC News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Overlee Flying Fish named former swimmer Ryan York as head coach for summer meets starting Saturday, June 14 at 9 a.m. on the road in Burke—York swam for the team from age 6 to 18 and aims to guide them back to a Division 1 championship.  ARLnow
  • The Washington-Liberty Generals began the season with a 6—2 record through eight matches, winning against Sidwell Friends, West Springfield, Marshall, Falls Church and South County while losing close games by one goal each to Oakton Cougars and McLean Highlanders. They will face Lake Braddock on April 29th, host rivals Wakefield on May 1st, visit Yorktown on May 6th and host Langley on May 8th before the district tournament.  ARLnow
  • Yorktown High School girls swimming and diving team had several athletes chosen as Class 6 all-state for the 2024-25 season - including senior Nora Sherman, juniors Sophie Fredericks and Mary Hecmanczuk, sophomore Lila Sherman and freshman Cory McKenzie, plus diver Cecilia Yen - and their awards helped the team win the state championship and district titles last season.  ARLnow
  • Arlington resident Azzi Fudd scored 24 points and grabbed five rebounds to help the University of Connecticut women's basketball team win the national championship with an 82-59 victory over South Carolina last Sunday, April 6. Fudd, who once helped win a national flag-football championship as a youth, earned the Most Outstanding Player award and averaged 13.6 points per game this season.  ARLnow
  • Recent Arlington high school baseball games saw the Wakefield Warriors beat Washington—Liberty Generals 8 to 5 then lose 9 to 3 to the Yorktown Patriots, with standout performances including Clockwork pitching by Cort Bringham. In private school play the Bishop O’Connell Knights won 13 to 3 over Bishop McNamara then edged St. Paul VI Catholic 2 to 1.  ARLnow
  • George Washington University has played home baseball at Tucker Field in Barcroft Park since 1993 and has a 500-331-1 record entering this season—after losing 5-2 to VCU on April 6, the team went 21-10 last season and stood 13-9 through April 5. The team has eight home games remaining with the next game set for Tuesday, April 15 at 3 p.m. against Virginia Military Institute.  ARLnow
  • Marymount University’s undefeated flag football team is 9—0 with nine shutout wins and outscored opponents 310—0 this spring, including a 39—0 win over Holy Family. Coach Mike Rivera said the team, which recruited athletes from other Marymount sports, will aim for the top seed as it prepares for the Atlantic East Conference tournament at Bishop O’Connell High School on April 26 or 27.  ARLnow
