  • This weekend, many events take place across the DMV as Arlington holds the Spring Artful Weekend at Hendry House on Saturday and again today while Washington hosts Awesome Con and a Nationals game. Residents may enjoy arts, sports and family programs offered in the region—ensuring there is an event to suit every interest.  WJLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senators and delegates in Virginia sent a bipartisan letter Friday to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins asking about reworking a halted $500 million TEFAP funding—money food banks rely on to feed low-income families. The lawmakers said over 400 local pantries are strained by rising food costs and increasing demand from communities facing food insecurity.  WJLA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Emmett Engelhardt, a senior who plays three sports at Washington-Liberty, verbally committed to join American University where he will compete on the cross-country and track teams—he won key races at the Monroe Parker Invitational and at the Arlington County and Liberty District championships and is set to run in the outdoor meet this coming week.  ARLnow
  • Jake Coulam, a junior point guard at Yorktown, was named to the VHSL Class 6 second team after a season where he averaged 12 points per game—he also led the Patriots in three-pointers and assists while earning district Player of the Year honors. His performance helped the team tie a program record of 20 wins.  ARLnow
  • Two Wakefield High School rowers, Mira Meek and Tony Madigan, have been selected for the USRowing Under-19 National Team Selection Camp this summer to prepare for the World Rowing Championships & they will train in San Diego for one month before competing in Trakai, Lithuania from August 6 to 10.  ARLnow
  • Arlington Elite, a sixth-grade Division 1 team, won the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League tournament title with wins against Vienna 54 to 39, Great Falls 52 to 47 and Reston 54 to 48—finishing with an overall record of 11 to 6 while Henry Freeman-Moore was chosen as tournament MVP.  ARLnow
  • The fifth-grade Division 3 Blazers from Arlington Travel Basketball capped a 16-1 season by winning the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League tournament title after three straight wins — including a final 41-35 victory over Herndon — marking one of the best records in the league.  ARLnow
  • Two Arlington high school swimmers had standout junior seasons for Delaware’s Division I teams this winter — Lauren Hartel led the women’s team with strong relay and individual performances — and Matvei Namakonov won two CAA men’s races; he will try to qualify in Florida later this month for the world championships in July — a goal he says will mark a major milestone in his career — after a rigorous season.  ARLnow
  • On April Fools' Day, the Bishop O’Connell Knights beat host St. Mary’s Ryken Knights 3-1—extending their unbeaten record to 8-0 in a key rivalry game in southern Maryland. At the same time, the Yorktown Patriots edged defending champion Langley Saxons 3-1 as senior pitcher Samantha Parker threw a complete game without walks.  ARLnow
  • Arlington siblings Caitlin and Mason Cunningham had very different fall college sports seasons as Caitlin played every match for George Washington University women's soccer team in fall 2024 while Mason suffered a serious right‐knee injury in a preseason game for Hampden-Sydney College football and did not play. Mason said his recovery is progressing and he hopes to return to play when preseason workouts begin later this year—after a season marked by a long recovery process and missed playing time.  ARLnow
