ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Arlington firefighters blocked off Wilson Boulevard after a fire broke out at Liberty Tavern in the 3100 block of Wilson Blvd yesterday morning—fire officials said the blaze started in the pizza oven and spread to the ceiling before crews contained hot spots with no injuries as the fire marshal investigates the cause.  DC News Now
  • A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries on April 2 around 11 a.m. when he clipped a car on northbound Glebe Road near the Henderson Road/Quincy Street intersection near Ballston—first responders found him unconscious and transported him to a local trauma center.  ARLnow
  • Firefighters battled a small blaze at Liberty Tavern in Clarendon on Wednesday after a 911 call reported smoke from the restaurant—fire in the pizza oven had spread into the duct work and ceiling, and police blocked nearby roads while the blaze was contained. The county fire marshal investigated the cause, no injuries were reported, and the restaurant expected to reopen later today after cleanup and health inspections.  ARLnow

  • Amorino Gelato al Naturale opened yesterday at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City near the food court, and Pollo Campero will open Friday at 10 a.m. with free giveaways for the first 100 guests—both adding new dining choices at the mall.  ARLnow

CRIME NEWS

  • Virginia State Police and Arlington County Police Department asked for help finding 25-year-old Michaela Nicole Matthews who went missing on Tuesday April 1 near the 3000 block of S Randolph St at about 9:52 p.m. while driving a red 2017 Ford Explorer and described as approximately 5 ft 6 in and 140 lbs with brown hair and brown eyes, and police warned she may be armed—if anyone sees her or the vehicle, they should call 703-228-4005 or 911.  DC News Now

  • The Leadership Center of Arlington will host a free Leadership, Career and Volunteer Expo on April 5 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Washington DC — Crystal City to offer job seekers networking opportunities, a keynote seminar with Kate Ebner at 1 p.m., additional leadership sessions, free headshots, and resume reviews.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The FAA announced that it will boost air traffic control oversight at DCA and review aircraft arrival rates after a deadly midair collision claimed 67 lives. A Critical Incident Stress Management team is scheduled to visit early April — officials plan additional staffing measures to support controllers — as the agency works to improve safety.  WJLA
  • Residents and business owners told the County Board on March 27 that raising the meals tax from 3% to 4% and a higher real estate tax rate would hurt families and small businesses. Officials will continue discussing the proposals before the budget is set on April 9 — many speakers urge the county to manage costs.  ARLnow
  • The Arlington County Board will vote this Saturday on a $9.6 million plan for Fort Myer Construction Corporation to fix the 1950s bridge over Four Mile Run. Construction may start later this summer as negotiations continue—details depend on the condition of the bridge—while efforts aim to keep the bridge partly open during repairs.  ARLnow

  • Developer Penzance’s One Rosslyn project near Gateway Park will replace two office buildings with three residential towers offering over 800 units and is set for summer review by the Arlington County Board.
