Good morning, Arlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of March.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On March 26th at around 2:30 p.m., an outdoor fire near Washington-Liberty High School along the 1500 block of N. Stafford Street burned a shed and spread to trees and brush, prompting a large ACFD response and the closure of roads amid a Red Flag Warning.  ARLnow
  • Firefighters battled a large house fire in the Woodmont neighborhood on the 2900 block of 24th Rd N — they extinguished most of the first-floor blaze as a second alarm was dispatched to put out flames that had spread into the attic.  ARLnow

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new Andy’s Pizza in Virginia Square will open soon-ish after delaying its late March launch—visible work like new booths, red tile accents and lighting is seen at 901 N. Pollard Street. The restaurant will replace the closed Ballston Place Gourmet deli, which has been shuttered for about two years.  ARLnow

CRIME NEWS

  • A middle school student (14) faced charges for threatening a peer with a knife at Swanson Middle School (Westover) on Tuesday; Arlington police seized two knives from his belongings and reported no injuries.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed a bill that would let Arlington change its government structure for the first time in 93 years—an effort that passed both legislative chambers but was opposed by the County Board. Del. Patrick Hope vowed to continue fighting for the change and expects a new attempt in 2026.  ARLnow
  • Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz’s proposed FY 2026 budget—designed to maintain current tax rates—will cut the eviction prevention program by $1.1 million, reduce planning and code enforcement staff, cancel Madison Preschool and the traveling art truck, and lower ART Route 43 frequency to 20-minute wait times. The plan could increase evictions and slow safety inspections while a County Board public hearing is set for tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Central Library Auditorium.  ARLnow
  • State of GovTech 2025 will be held on June 17 and 18 at Amazon’s HQ2 in Arlington as government officials, tech leaders and startups gather to explore emerging technology and problem solving sessions. Organized by CivStart (partnered with Arlington Economic Development, Technologists for the Public Good, the National League of Cities and e.Republic) the event aims to transform local public services.  ARLnow
