Good morning, Arlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 26th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arlington again ranks as one of the best cities to live in America—keeping its No.4 spot in the 2025 Niche ranking while Colonial Village holds the top place nationwide. The ratings give high marks for schools, nightlife and health and fitness—though housing and cost of living received lower scores.  ARLnow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Metro proposed several service cuts at a DMVMoves meeting Monday that would save about $19 million despite growing ridership and revenue, Metro General Manager Randy Clarke said. The measures for the next fiscal year starting July 1 include delaying a Yellow Line plan to Greenbelt, streamlining bus services and reducing station staff during low-demand periods — steps aimed at lowering taxpayer subsidies.  WJLA
  • Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin signed a law that requires all public and private schools to notify parents within 24 hours of a suspected or confirmed overdose after delayed alerts followed 11 overdoses at Park View High School last fall. The legislation, which passed almost unanimously in both chambers, codifies his executive order—fulfilling his goal for swift parent notification—and critics say it singles out Loudoun schools to avoid accountability.  WJLA
  • Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz proposed raising planning, zoning and inspection fees to cover full staff costs—critics say steep increases may raise construction expenses and slow development. Some fees may triple and new charges will be reviewed at a public hearing on Thursday before a final budget vote on April 9.  ARLnow
  • On Monday, Gov. Glenn Youngkin changed the budget bill to add $300 million to the rainy-day fund, which will boost the reserve to nearly $5 billion—this change came as he trimmed state spending amid claims by federal workers. Lawmakers will review his revisions on April 2 as his administration supports a $200 tax rebate for taxpayers.  ARLnow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The 15th Annual Northern Virginia Housing Expo will be held at Meridian High School next to West Falls Church Metro on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event will offer classes, workshops, and financial coaching to help first-time buyers and renters.  ARLnow
