Good morning, Arlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of March.
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Army Col. Tony Marston was running on the Mount Vernon Trail when he saw a Jeep plunge into the Potomac River on Tuesday evening, and he and other bystanders rescued the lone driver who could not swim—she was later taken to the hospital while Park Police have not determined what caused the crash. NBC Washington
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Arlington hotels will see a 15% lower occupancy rate and a 12% drop in revenue over the next 60 days compared to last year, which may slow job growth and reduce county tax income. Economic Development Director Ryan Touhill said meeting cancellations and concerns over international travel will add to the challenges—officials hope the World Pride DC event brings in more visitors. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal immigration agents detained Georgetown University graduate student Badar Khan Suri outside his Arlington home Monday night after revoking his student visa, and he is now held at an Alexandria facility pending an immigration hearing. His attorney filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus in Virginia federal court — stating that Suri did nothing wrong and his arrest is unjustified. NBC Washington
- ➤ Arlington leaders warned that more federal job cuts will cut the county’s revenue—forcing cuts in essential services and fee hikes. County Chair Takis P. Karantonis said that the current budget is already trimmed with a food tax increase and $13 million in program cuts, and further layoffs could worsen those measures. WJLA
- ➤ Arlington neighborhoods may lose their final say on new sidewalk placements as County Manager Mark Schwartz said during a March 12 meeting that he planned a countywide plan that could override local opinions—he said the proposal will address gaps in sidewalk coverage and shift maintenance from property owners to the county if approved. This change may affect future development projects across Arlington. ARLnow
- ➤ The Arlington County Board approved $419,393 for immigration nonprofits under the RACE to Rebuilding Trust initiative but did not fund the Ethiopian Community Development Council—whose founder said the group is struggling after laying off staff—and board members said they will help find other funding; payments will begin in July. - ➤ Arlington County will clean its water pipes starting Monday until May 5 and treat tap water with chlorine instead of chloramine so residents may notice a change in taste and odor while water service continues uninterrupted. Residents can use a tap filter or let water cool to reduce the chlorine scent and plan laundry during hydrant flushing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the process is part of a system-wide effort to maintain water quality.
